Virtual Gordon Smith Relays

Gordon Smith Relay

Although the popular Gordon Smith Relays can’t take place as usual this year, we have decided to hold the Virtual Gordon Smith Relays instead.

As usual, the relays are for men’s & women’s teams of 3, minimum age is 16 but one team member must be V35 or older. Each leg has to be 2 miles with no more than –20ft elevation.

The legs must be ran between Sunday 24 May and Saturday 30 May. Each clubs’ men’s and women’s club captains to verify their club’s results on Garmin/Strava. Men’s and women’s club captains to collate the results and return them to wallsendharriers@gmail.com by no later than 5pm Saturday 30 May.

A spreadsheet to collate the results has been emailed out but please let me know if you haven’t received it.

There is no entry fee for the relays. However, as you may be aware, many charities are currently struggling for money especially as mass fundraising events have had to be cancelled. We hope that each runner will make a donation, no matter how small, to a charity close to our club’s heart, St Oswald’s Hospice. You can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/wallsend-harriers-ac

Please remember to follow social distancing rules.

Thank you and good luck!

For the love of Lambton and thereafter…

And so it was Lambton where we had our final x-country outing of what became a season like no other. X-country has a reputation for tenacity and determination, battling and braving the elements, always on at all costs. But 2019/20 threw more at us than we bargained for. First the storms and floods and then the coronavirus. Mother Nature fighting back perhaps?

I think most of us knew this would be our last chance to run as a club for a while but I was still naïve as to the enormity of what would unfold. Not only the last of the x-countries but the start of race after race being postponed, cancelled or rescheduled, including our own Terry O’Gara Memorial 5k.

So this was our last chance to show everyone what Wallsend is made of. The turn out of Green and Golds was phenomenal (29 in total) and so was the camaraderie and gusto. As expected, the overall numbers were down, providing the perfect opportunity to score some vital points.

Super Saturday!

Finally, a weekend without a storm, or storm-related car-parking implications! Us green and golds were chomping at the bit to get back out at a Harrier league x-country. The sun was out at Alnwick (as was the wind unfortunately) and we had some secret weapons up our sleeve!

Championship weekend

Our Wallsend Juniors retained their Championship status in the Blyth Sportshall NOTAN Series for the third year in a row!

It was great to see such a fantastic turn out from our young athletes.

Kasper Pearson was the only child to receive a Grade 1 and broke records in the standing long jump and push throw! There were lots of new faces too, which was wonderful to see and everyone gave it their all in every event. The events included a sprint, throw, endurance run, standing long jump and vertical throw.

Full results here.
