That was the week that was…Green and Gold-tastic!
I’m exhausted just writing this…
While most people kick back and enjoy their Easter hols us Green and Golds can’t even relax on honeymoon! Bring on the crazy newlyweds Gary and Leanne who spent the first weekend of their romantic Florida retreat taking part in Ironman 70.3! They both completed the gruelling challenge in under 7 hours. We’re all unbelievably proud of you now go drink, eat and chill out you mad pair!
Read on, there’s loads more to report!
Meanwhile our very own Posh and Becks continue to hog the headlines. Harry Coates crowned overall winner of the X-Country Harrier League and Becki Newman a world record-breaker no less! Competing as part of the Newcastle Swim Team quartet at the Great Britain Masters Championships they broke the World Record in the Mixed 100+ years 4 x 200 metres Freestyle Relay with a time of 8:54.27. They also set a new British Record in the 4 x 100 metres Freestyle and claimed gold in the 4 x 200 metres Freestyle.
The popular, flat and fast course at Blyth 10k brought with it some welcome PBs. Well done to Kevin Wilson (first Wallsend man), Jo Collins, Dan Smith, Keith O’Donnell, Andy Wigmore, Gav Lee, Paul James, Tony Maddocks, Penny Pegman (first Wallsend lady), Anna French, Lyndsey Day, Laura Murphy, Nina Wilkinson and Sara Morgan.
And on a beautiful Spring Sunday (finally!) there was plenty to be proud of…
Over in sunny South Shields Lyndsey Day, Jackie Garnett, Sarah Wylie, Jeanette Gibson all flew the Green and Gold flag at the South Shields Sand Dancer 10k.
Churchill Playing Fields was rocking with team spirit and determination at the Spring Track Relays, organised by North Shields Poly.
Fourteen juniors were the pride of Wallsend. Full report to follow on how the juniors performed.
The senior men’s team (Mason and Denver Stretesky, Olly Aird and Matt the Tash) bagged two very respectable second places in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. And the senior women’s dream team (most of whom hadn’t touched a baton since school) of Gill Weatherill, Emily James, Christine Stretesky and Kayleigh Dunn only went and brought home the gold in the 4 x 800 relays!
If that wasn’t enough to spur you on and sign up for this season’s cracking series of races and track and field events I don’t know what is. It was a thrill for all those taking part and supporting so let’s see even more of you turn out and keep the Green and Gold fire burning. Let’s bring it on for Terry’s Race (April 24th). If anyone deserves it he does.
Emily (who has now been well and truly bitten by the relay bug!)
