Club Championships 2018
A fantastic turnout for this year’s Club Championships, despite the prediction of thunder and lightning. The only storming to be seen, was the finishes!!
55 of you in total descended on Rheydt Avenue and covered the route in (mostly) Green and Gold!
Our 11 juniors started us off from the top of West Street; no care of it being a school night as they blazed towards the finish line.
Alas there could only be one victor with Josh Oates leading the way home in a pretty spectacular 5:14, Cam Motion was second in 5:44. Ellen Williams rounded off the podium in 3rd, as well as being the first lady in 6:02.
Next up were the seniors, 44 in total lined up for this years bragging rights; with 1 lap of the course for our ladies and 2 for the men.
13 ladies had the opportunity to nab the Margaret Watson Shield – held by Sarah Robson for the last 2 years.
A threepeat was just out of reach as Alex Hemsley led from start to finish in a fantastic 20:54. Sarah was second in 21:28, just shy of her 2017 time whilst recently returning from injury, with Emily James (who continues her fabulous recent form) taking 3rd place overall and first vet in a PB of 22:30.
A huge congratulations to Alex in her debut season with us!!
Meanwhile our Senior Men knew that 2017 winner, Sam Charlton, was pre-occupied with England School glory.
There was much debate raging on who would take the title – would our Captain, Simon Lyon take his recent track form on to the road? Could Andy Graham recuperate from his time in Ibiza? Was Tim Nicholson, our 2016 winner, a dark horse with his marathon mileage?
It was close for the majority of the race, but Andy Graham took the title in 35:16, holding off from Kevin Wilson in 35:44 and Tim Nicholson in 36:01.
Massive Congratulations to Andy, getting his hands on the trophy for the first time.
