2007 Wallsend World Record Attempt
Us Wallsenders have always been a tenacious bunch. And this week’s Throwback Thursday pays tribute to none other than a world record attempt by Wallsend Harriers in Spring 2007!
Bill McGuirk wrote in the Chronicle’s then ‘Inside Track’ athletics feature, that a determined band of Green and Gold men were attempting to break the 100-mile relay world record for a team of 10 runners. They even managed to wangle a £10 bet each out of William Hill at odds of 10-1!
Previous to their attempt the record stood at 9 hours and 41 minutes, which was set two years before at Crystal Palace by Dulwich Runners AC. Our guys were taking on the ambitious challenge at Churchill Playing Fields in Whitley Bay. They were:
Paul Brown, Paul Leigh, Gareth Huxley, Dave Moir, Tony Carter, Dave Daniels, Steve O’Gara, Dave Anderson, Steve Hargreaves and Mark Hall.
But would our warriors be victorious? Tune in for next week’s Thursday Throwback to find out (unless you were there and remember, in which case keep shtum!)
