Flashback Friday – Wallsend men lift Sisterson Trophy
Today we head back to 2009 and another victorious and historic day for the Green and Golds.
On the 2nd April of that year the Evening Chronicle reported on 40 plus Wallsend Harrier men turning out for the last fixture of the Start Fitness North East Harrier League at Temple Park in South Shields (now the x-country venue for the Sherman Cup in January).
They had their eye on the big prize – the Sisterson Trophy – which, I am informed by a reliable source, was awarded to the men’s winners of the NEHL, which in 2009 was celebrating its centenary year.
Sunderland had reigned supreme in previous years, with 10 successive titles, but Mick Skeldon and Bill Todd (our then club captains) had rallied the troops with gusto, determined to bring victory to the club and raise the trophy for the first time. It was a double celebration for former chair, our beloved Terry O’Gara, who in 2009 was celebrating 25 years with the club.
