Heaton Memorial 10k – race report

heaton1I imagine that most Wallsend Harriers have raced this event at some point in time but for anyone that hasn’t it was described as a fast flat course, which it was.  Basically it is two laps of Newcastle Parkrun with a couple of hairpin bends thrown in for good measure.

The very first Heaton Memorial Road Race took park in 1920 to remember those who died in the Great War. Heaton, in common with many other North East clubs lost many of their young men in the conflict between 1914 -18. Out of the 120 Heaton members registered at the time – 100 served in the forces – 12 never to return.

My Half Marathon Challenge – by Mark Summers

mark4It seemed a good idea at the time, a challenge borne out of an end of season slump in motivation. 2015 had started well, a 106 mile Cyclone sportive entry had me covering unheard bike miles together with healthy run distances. Half marathon, 10K and Blaydon Race PBs fell as my fitness benefited from my cross-training regime. A last minute injury forced me to withdraw from the event and led to a slump in motivation which lasted the best part of six months. I needed something to aim for but what?

Green and golds galore at Rising Sun Park Run

parkrun
Remember, remember the 5th of November…

when Wallsend Harriers AC took over Rising Sun Park Run! And it was glorious.

The weather might not have been but it’s got considerably worse since so we were actually pretty lucky!

Over 250 runners, many of whom were donning a green and gold vest, took on the fast 5k course around the Rising Sun Country Park. There were PBs flying all over the place! Those who weren’t running could be seen marshaling, taking photos, handing out leaflets or generally helping out behind the scenes. Thanks to all who joined in, in whatever capacity. You did your club proud and you all get 50 points in the Winter Grand Prix series! Special thanks to Mick Day for organising.

Full results are on the Park Run website and there are lots of photos now on the gallery page of this website (thank-you Simon Williams!)

Morpeth to Newcastle

m6Before we get onto the half marathon we must start by congratulating the awesome fivesome who completed the full Morpeth to Newcastle adventure. Alastair Willis (3:14.41), Keith O’Donnell (3:15.42), Steve Mallam (3:44), Mark Richardson and Andy Clark (5:09).

Our Ironman Leanne has kindly written her account of the half…

There was definitely a relaxed feeling emanating from the Wallsend contingent at the start of the ‘North Tyneside to Newcastle’ half marathon on Sunday, certainly for me, not the pre – race nerves I have experienced in other races.
